Leadership: Just as Jesus Christ set an example of servant leadership we seek to lead by being an example of serving Christ in all persons and loving our neighbors as ourselves.
Compassion: We seek to be a beacon of hope where all who wearied by the changes and chances of this life may find compassion, healing, renewal, and rest.
Inclusivity: All are welcome at St. George’s Episcopal Church regardless of race, sexuality, gender, and all ways that differentiate humans one from another. Together we are one Body. Our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We seek to preserve the diversity of God’s creation respecting the dignity of every human being.
The Christian Faith and Worship: The center of our common life is Eucharistic worship, the sacrament where we experience the living presence of Christ. We lift up our hearts and minds and glorify God through liturgy that embodies the Episcopal faith tradition. We seek worship that brings us into a direct and intimate relationship with God and each other through the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in our prayers.
History/Heritage: We honor the tradition of the Episcopal Church valuing spiritual freedom and shared authority. As a parish, we cherish our 90 year history and are honored to continue to be a neighborhood church at the corner of Second and U street. We strive to use the best of our history/heritage in our quest for justice and peace.
Goal #1 Create a Clear Discipleship Path
This goal was based on the Core Values of Christian Faith and Inclusion.
We are a people grounded in faith and love. We seek to continue developing disciples with intentionality through prayer, study, and education.
Goal #2 Develop Leaders
This goal was based on the Core Values of Leadership, Christian Faith, Compassion, and Inclusion. St. George’s has a strong legacy of developing leaders in the church. We have nurtured the careers of many active priests, bishops and countless lay people. We also provide leadership to the diocese and the greater Espicopal church community. We mentor students and provide outstanding pastoral care and we should continue to develop and grow those opportunities to build leadership in all areas of our church life. We seek to include all members in the leadership of the parish recognizing each individual’s spiritual gifts that can be used for the common good.
Goal #3 Expand Outreach
This goal was based on Core Values of Compassion, Christian Faith, Inclusion, and Legacy.
St. George’s must work to become a community resource. To do this we must become more active in our local community and work together with neighborhood resources to better the community we live in. This means reaching out to people and organizations to form partnerships that help the community grow and in turn help keep St. George’s a viable and thriving resource for the community.
Goal # 4 Build up Oral History Project
This goal is based on the Core Value of Legacy. St. George’s has a rich history. The dedication and hard work that brought about the church, out of hardship, should never be forgotten and are the foundation that the present church stands on today. This rich African American heritage is the backbone of the church and should be taught to future members and celebrated now. To that end a comprehensive Oral History project has been undertaken to forever memorialize the contributions of those that went before us and has been submitted the DC Humanities Council and resides in the DC Library. This project is a work in progress and includes a documentary and the compilation of notes and stories of the parishioners and families of St. George’s.
